Hang out the bunting and start popping the corks because it’s 21 years since we opened the doors at the Alford Arms.
Phew, doesn’t time fly? It seems only yesterday we were chucking out the dead spider plants and beginning the transformation of a former brewpub in Frithsden into Hertfordshire’s dining pub of the year.
You wouldn’t recognise the place now, because back then the Alford was a very different animal as some of our old photos show. It would be nice to say that the fake paneling, the dark beams and assorted brass knick-knacks were lovely, but they weren’t – they were horrible and fake! We opened the doors on January 18th, but it took until October 1999 before we closed down for a full refurbishment.
Traditionally, twenty-one years in wedding anniversary terms would be a gift of brass or nickel apparently. Although David has seen a new drill he likes so maybe that’ll do!
